New Release of CDART

Long time no post! NCBI has announced its new release of CDART, Conserved Domain Architecture Retrieval Tool with enhanced features such as:

improved performance for long query proteins
expanded input options: protein sequence, set of conserved domains
display of similarity scores
filtering of results

Cytoscape Webinar

President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Provost Phil Hanlon announced the University of Michigan’s support to expand postdoctoral fellowship opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the social, behavioral and economics fields. Applications are currently being accepted and more information is available at the University Partnerships for Faculty Diversity site.

PNAS Editor to Head New OA Journal

Science Magazine reported that Randy Schekman will be the new editor-in-chief of a new open access journal slated to be released next year by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Wellcome Trust, and the Max Planck Society. Biointerfaces Symposium at NCRC

The Biointerfaces Symposium is meant to foster academic and entrepreneurial partnerships and features speakers in business, law, public policy and more. Happy Birthday NLM

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) celebrates its 175th anniversary this year. One of the outstanding creations of our government and our nation, the library is one of the reasons that I am a medical librarian because I am not sure my profession would be what it is today without NLM in its history. A library that holds true to the vision of what libraries should be, empowering people through knowledge sharing and archiving; knowledge about health – to boot. We all deserve to have access to knowledge and to be healthy, and NLM is the role model.

I know I am sounding soap-box-y again…but:

Come on people… PubMed – publicly available health information available 24/7 with tens of millions of articles? A full-text repository, aka PubMed Central? The National Center for Biotechnology Information…um Entrez Gene, folks? And the list goes on…

Wow. What an accomplishment.

NCBI to Discontinue SRA and Peptidome

NCBI announced its plans to discontinue their Sequence Read Archive (SRA) and Trace Archive repositories for high-throughput sequence data as well as their Peptidome Respository. According to their news announcement, they will phase out submissions but also make the Peptidome data available from their FTP server indefinitely.
